Stand Still And Consider The Wondrous Works Of God by Nathaniel Outcalt

We live on a planet that is spinning 1,000 miles per hour (mph) at the equator while traveling at a speed of over 66,000 mph around the sun. If that’s not fast enough for you, take into account that our solar system is orbiting the center of our galaxy at a rate of 560,000 mph. Of course the speeds are all relative but it reminds me that life moves very fast. Job 37:14 states, “Listen to this, O Job; Stand still and consider the wondrous works of God.” This past year has flown by and a new one approaches. I pray that we will stop and consider all that the Lord wants us to see but we often miss. When we stand still and consider God’s wondrous works we will draw closer to Him and have the right focus in our lives.

God’s Creation – As Elihu spoke in Job 37:14 he wanted Job to contemplate God’s awesome creation. He needed to remember that God was all powerful and in control of the universe. Today, many consider the achievements of man and forget all about what God has done. Each day we need to stand in awe of our God’s incredible power and His magnificent creation. When we take the time to stand still and consider the wondrous works of God it will humble us (Psalm 8:3-4). I have been moved to tears, praise and mediation many times in the last five years as I’ve taken in the views from Ledges to Yellowstone. It’s always been an uplifting experience to find some quiet place to think about my Creator. Please make a great effort this coming year to look around and marvel at the beauty of this world that our Father in heaven has made. Also, don’t forgot that this same Creator made you and cares about you more than you know (Psalm 139:14).

God’s Word – In Psalm 19 David begins by pointing us to the heavens. God’s creation should lead us to know that God is real and fill us with the desire to know more about Him. Thankfully, God has revealed Himself to us through His wonderful word (Psalm 19:7-14). How often do you think about God’s word? Psalm 119:18 reminds us that we need to open our eyes and see the wondrous things from God’s law. The word of God is truly wonderful and will show us the way we need to go (Psalm 119:93, 105). Don’t forget to spend time with God’s word each day (Psalm 119:15, 27).

God’s Son – God’s word from the very beginning pointed to His Son and how He would redeem us (Genesis 22:18). We need to stand still and consider the great work that Jesus has done for us (John 4:34). He left heaven above, came to this earth and died for you and me (Hebrews 2:9-10). Job did not have everything revealed to Him but still longed for a Redeemer (Job 19:25). We see Jesus clearly now and need to consider how we should live for Him. I hope that everyday you will remember that you have a Savior and that you will strive to glorify Him. If it was not for Jesus we would be lost and without hope (Ephesians 2:12).

May we never let another day go by without stopping to consider God’s wondrous works!
